A lot of being a musician comes down to paying attention.
To the audience. To the musicians around you. To the story a piece of music is meant to tell. Sometimes the right choice is to step forward; sometimes it’s to leave a little space.
That’s the idea behind Reading the Room.
I’m Dave LaGrande, a composer, arranger, performer, and music educator based in Southwest Florida. This blog is a place to share what I’ve learned—and what I’m still learning—from a career that has moved between classrooms, touring stages, recording studios, and composing projects.
You’ll find stories from performing, thoughts on composing and arranging, practical ideas for students and musicians, and the occasional look at the tools and decisions behind the work.
If you’re a musician, a music lover, or simply curious about what happens behind the scenes, welcome. I’m glad you’re here.
—Dave
